Howland Hook, Staten Island, was used at least twice in 2006 for deployments to Iraq? {1}
The Army acknowledges that National Guard and other units are deployed through Howland Hook. {2}
Howland Hook has been used for deployments from both Fort Drum and Fort Dix since the
closure of the Bayonne Military Ocean Terminal in September 1999. {3}
The Port Authority has confirmed that the Howland Hook Container Terminal
is an Army "Seaport of Embarkation" for the Northeast. {4}
As of January 17, 2008 - 3923 US military personnel have been killed in Iraq. {5}
Many soldiers killed in Iraq were "backdoor draftees" - National Guard reservists
who signed on to serve their communities and their country and instead found
themselves in the middle of the Iraqi civil war.
Deployments of National Guard units continue - draining communities of women and men who
would otherwise be available to respond to emergencies here in the US. Some of these deployments
are being quietly conducted in OUR community.

What You Can Do: |
Join the growing community of people who want an end to the illegal war, who
want their sons and daughters home, who want the abuse of the National Guard
to cease.
Join with Governor Jon Corzine who has spoken out against these deployments:
"The fact that we continue to have the kind of overuse of our National Guard is just a mistake," said Corzine, noting the deployments are "very harsh on the families" and the continued use [ of reservists ] in the war hampers the National Guard. "I think it is undermining of the basic purpose of the National Guard," Corzine said. {6}
Contact your representatives and demand that the militarization of our ports and our
communities stop. Demand that the National Guard be brought home from Iraq now.
